POW-MIA
FLAGS
FOR
REST AREAS ON WISCONSIN INTERSTATE SYSTEM
Comrades, Sisters
and Friends:
Soon you
will see the POW-MIA Flags flying along the Wisconsin Interstate System.
This is a result
of Legislation that was passed last year.
Funds have been
raised from many donors, to purchase the flags.
We are required
under the law to provide flags to the Department of Transportation.
The Department
of Transportation is required to display the POW-MIA flags every day 24
x 7. Year around.
Contributions
for the POW-MIA flags can be made to the VFW Department of Wisconsin.
Earmark your
check POW-MIA Flag fund. No amount is too small.
Each batch of
flags provided to the Department of Transportation cost about $700.00.
The life of these
flags is expected to be 3 or 4 months, before they need to be replaced.

The Articles of the Military Code of Conduct
ARTICLE I:
I am an American,
fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life.
I am prepared
to give my life in their defense.
ARTICLE II:
I will never
surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender
the
members of my
command while they still have the means to resist.
ARTICLE III:
If I am captured
I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every
effort to escape and to aid others to escape.
I will accept
neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.
ARTICLE IV:
If I become a
prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will
give no information nor take
part in any action
which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take
command.
If not, I will
obey lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them in every
way.
ARTICLE V:
When questioned,
should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service
number, and date of birth.
I will evade
answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make
no oral or written
statements disloyal
to my country or its allies or harmful to their cause.
ARTICLE VI:
I will never
forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my
actions, and dedicated to the
principles which
made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the UNITED STATES
OF AMERICA.
Yes
it is possible
to obtain a flag for a deceased Veteran even if documentary proof of the
Veteran’s service is unavailable.
Many families that have experienced difficulty in obtaining a flag for
a deceased Veteran.
“Some don’t ever
apply for the flag because they don’t feel that they will be successful
in obtaining it.”
The instructions on the VA application (Form
21-2008) explain that if the applicant is unable to furnish
documentary
proof (such as
a DD214), a “statement… made by a person of established character and reputation
that he/she personally
knows the deceased
to have been a Veteran…” will be an acceptable substitute.
Deceased veterans qualified to receive flags are Veterans of Wars, the
Mexican border service, or service after
January 31, 1955,
discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions, or
discharged from or released
from active duty
in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard
under honorable conditions after
serving at least
one complete peacetime enlistment before June 27, 1950 or for disability
incurred in the line of duty.
Flags are also
available for service men and women that were in active service at the
time of death if a flag was not
obtainable from
a military or naval establishment in time for the burial.
“When widows and survivors of deceased Veterans need assistance obtaining
flags, I hope they will be aware
of this option”.
“This is something that can really help if official documents are not available.”
